Education and Specialty
Karl Smart is an ANCC Board Certified Family Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Nurse Practitioner whom will be joining the Georgia Behavioral Health Professionals group in July 2018. He graduated from the University of Colorado, Health Sciences Center in 1998 with a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing. Karl worked as a Registered Nurse for ten years. During that time, he worked in Portland, Oregon VA Medical Center and Children's Hopsitals in San Diego, Denver and San Francisco. He graduated from the University of California San Francisco in 2007 with a Master's of Science in Nursing.
Karl is affiliated with APNA and Board Certified by the ANCC. He is a licensed Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, and Clinical Nurse Specialist. He has also been trained as a NOLS Wilderness First Responder and has led many groups of adolescents in nature-based coming of age programs; including yearly backpacking trips in California Sierras.

Karl is a skilled psychiatric provider with over 20 years of experience. Throughout his career, he has gained experience leading groups, practicing individual and family therapy, and providing medication management. He has experience and is certified to treat all ages from children to older adults. He uses a solutions based approach with a holistic focus and is informed by mindfulness and cognitive behavioral theories. He has extensive experience coordinating care with other primary care and mental health providers in collaborative care models.
Karl is a father, husband, and avid outdoorsman. He enjoys exploring, camping, backpacking, and spending time with family. Although he has spent many years in the western United States, he grew up in South Georgia. He also enjoys reading science fiction novels and watching films.
